My journey into local politics in Fairway started years ago when I first met my wife. Her family has lived their entire lives here on Buena Vista, yet has not been able to afford to buy their own house due to Fairway being considered a “destination neighborhood”. Now that we have our first child, he and any other child deserve the opportunity to stay here and not be moved out of their home simply because their parents are priced out!
This obvious inequality that runs throughout Fairway was clear to me when a only a few years ago I witnessed a family with a small child forced to leave their home simply because they were renters. The family was forced to pack everything out of their house over here on Buena Vista in one afternoon so that the landlord could sell the house and have it torn down. In its place, developers built a two story house worth almost double the price of the original house and this family was then forgotten about. The little girl who cried that she didn't want to leave her home was given no thought by the people buying the house, even though they had their own small child as well! The developers only cared about making money.
This inequality is wrong, and not in line with our beautiful city values of sustainability, safety and inclusion. Ever since I have been trying to fight this growing inequality in small ways, but I think now is the time to get formal changes here in Fairway, as that family and families like them are just as important as those we deem to be successful.
